Today the name "Zenit" is perceived as synonymous with the Krasnogorsk plant. However, in 1961, when the mass production of a new model of this small-format SLR camera just started, the name "Zenit" did not mean anything special and was not perceived as the company's major brand, even more so - as the "firm" name of the company. In the USSR there was a general practice of assigning each new model of any product its own unique name. And then, with each upgrade, it got added various indexes. A serious modernization of the Zenit-3 gave reason to change the name of the camera completely. The new camera is called "Kristall".

The main visible difference the "Kristall" had compared to its predecessor and successor models was the unique diecast aluminum alloy and painted enamel hammered top cover. It is this detail that gave the camera its name - which is associated not only with optics and transparency, but also reminds of the crystalline structure of the metal, is synonymous with strength, hardness, high value.

Changing the top cover helped dramatically reduce the complexity of its production - technologically complicated and lengthy processing of expensive brass sheet and coating electrochemically were replaced by high-tech injection molding with subsequent painting with enamel. In addition, deep-drawn brass sheet while the purely technological problems were observed and the percentage was great workmanship.
